Meet Preferred Vendor Whitney Owen Designs

Happy Friday! We are SO thrilled to have Whitney Owen as one of our preferred vendors at Eberley Brooks Events. Her ability to take our bride’s personalities, colors, styles, and wishes, and transform them into beautiful wedding suites is inspiring and unique. I asked Whitney to answer some questions about herself so we can learn a little more about the woman behind the invites!

Tell Us About Yourself

I grew up in Snyder, Texas and graduated from Snyder High School in 1999 and then graduated from Texas Tech University in 2004. My parents are Tim and Trussha Owen. I have two younger brothers, two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in- law and a total of four nieces and five nephews.

I met, Eric, the man I never thought I would find in 2005. Then six years later, Eric and I got married on June 11, 2011. He is a Senior Mechanical Engineer for Cummins, Inc. in Clovis, NM. We reside in Muleshoe, Texas and have four children with our fifth due in October. Trinity Harlowe is 6, Owen Wyatt is 4, Everly Bristol is 2 and Auburn Monroe is 14 months. We will share in October what Baby #5 is.

How Did You Get Started?

I was still in college at the time and one of my best friends happened to be engaged. While some other friends and I were planning her lingerie shower, we couldn’t find an invitation that worked for us. So, I thought that I would try my hand at making them. That’s where it all began… 16 years later and I am still creating and I love it so much!!

What Inspires You?

Oh man this is hard because so many things inspire me. My curious children have made me look at things in a new way. Fun, spunky high school or college seniors have such cool fashion and I find that inspiring. A good junking trip speaks deep to my soul while even a little time away from work to refresh helps inspire my creativity. Having an inspiring office space doesn’t hurt either! I have lots of old vintage pieces surrounding me while I work.

What Is Your Favorite Thing About Your Job?

You would think it would be the fact that I get to be creative everyday, however, it is the wonderful people I get the honor of working with. Getting to be a part of someone’s big day such as a wedding or graduation or those celebrating the impending arrival of a new baby, definitely gives me all the feels. I love when I can meet with clients in person because it just makes things that much more personal. I am so fortunate to have many of my clients turn into life-long friends. It has enriched my life in the best way possible!

Is there any particular moment that stands out to you?

Oh man! The spring of 2012 was absolutely INSANE! I don’t have employees so when I did 45 college/high school grad announcements, around 15 wedding suites and then the additional party/shower invites with my own two hands….let’s just say our home was CRAZY. I wasn’t a mom yet so getting it all done wasn’t a problem but keeping my mind right was a little tricky. Ha! So fun!!!

What Sets You apart from others in your industry?

I honestly don’t like comparing myself to other designers so this is a hard question. I can say that I take pride in the relationships I create with my clients and I truly want each one of their events to be special. I don’t want the process to be hard or tricky or even overwhelming for them so I try my very best to walk them through the process as painless as possible. Also, I feel my education and work background (see below) brings something a little different to the table.

What would you say to someone trying to decide between custom invites & using Minted or Shutterfly?

By choosing custom invitations, your options are endless! A client has so much more room to make their invitations truly fit their own personal, unique style while an online site puts limitations on your choices.

Is there any contribution or accomplishment that stands out the most to you?

My biggest accomplishment in my life has been becoming a mother. It is literally the most challenging yet the most rewarding role I have ever had. I am not a perfect mom but who is? I lack grace a lot of the time but man I sure do love my babies something fierce.

What Is Something Interesting About Yourself That Most People Don’t Know About?

I didn’t go to school for graphic design. I actually have my degree in interior design and a minor in architecture. I worked in the high-end residential field for awhile after I graduated from Texas Tech all while still doing my graphic design on the side. Ultimately, I went to work for myself and have been my own boss since May 2009. Although the majority of my work is now graphic design, I still do some interior work and even a little photography. I have actually been working with a client turned friend on a new construction home and cannot wait to see it all come together in a few months.

What Do You Like To Do In Your Free Time?

I love spending time at home with my husband and four children (five this fall). With them all being young, we haven’t been crazy enough to take cool vacations but we are definitely looking forward to it once they do get older.

Antiquing and junking is my jam! My mom and I love doing this together and we always find some of the coolest things.

If You Could Travel To Anywhere In The World, Where Would It Be & Why?

After taking architecture history classes, my desire to travel throughout Europe was intensified. I cannot wait to see the places I studied up close and personal. Art and architecture hold an emotional connection for me and I am that one that will be in tears when I can finally live out my dream.

Favorite Drink?

Oh, I do love me some coffee! I also like a good glass of iced tea and water at room temperature. I do enjoy a yummy margarita, mojito, Dos Equis or a Michelob Ultra from time to time.

Favorite Restaurant?

The Blue Goose in Dallas, Texas.

Favorite Type of Music?

If you could pull up my playlist, you’ll find some country, a little bit of rock, some pop and lots of hip-hop. Right now, I do have to say I am a little bit obsessed with Queen.

Favorite Holiday?

Hands down…Christmas! My love for Christmas began at an early age and it just grew over time. I definitely give my Mimi (Edna Owen) all the credit for this. My Owen grandparents’ home was always decorated so beautifully and could put you in the spirit as soon as you stepped in the door. I love giving and receiving gifts but that has nothing to do with why I love it so much. I adore the decor of course and my house is full of pretty things that time of year but the reason is so much more. I love the gathering of family, the sounds, the smells and most of all celebrating the birth of Jesus. Now, I have children so it just makes it so much more fun. Getting to make our own traditions has been so special.

What is one question that I did not ask you, but I should have?!

If you weren’t a graphic designer, what would you be?

I would be in the medical field of sorts! When I was younger, I wanted to be a pediatrician or even a veterinarian.

Thank you Whitney for taking the time to open up to your Eberley Brooks Family and our followers! We love you and are so thankful for you!
